Rest in peace Ray

One of America's most beloved singers, Ray Charles, has died at the age of 73. He had been suffering from liver disease. With a string of worldwide hits including "Georgia on my Mind" and "Hit the Road Jack", Ray Charles was known as the Genius of Soul.

Blending gospel with blues, Charles created a new, emotional kind of sound in the 1950s, which he called "soul music", a decade before it was recognised as a distinct genre.

A versatile artist, his repertoire also included R&B and country music. He was born to a poor family in Georgia and lost his sight to glaucoma at the age of six. During his career he fought and won a battle against heroin addiction, and continued writing and playing music right up until his death.

Rest in peace Ray .....
